BOKO HARAM: US, EU ask Jonathan to punish bombers

ABUJA—THE United States and European Union, yesterday, condemned the spate of bombings and assassinations particularly by Islamic sect, Boko Haram in Maiduguri, Borno State capital which have killed more than 150 people so far this year and tasked President Goodluck Jonathan to fish out the perpetrators. This came just as Senate summoned the leadership of all the security agencies in the country for briefing on steps so far taken to stem the bombings . The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, also assured that operations to bring an end to the menace of the sect will begin soon. Radical Islamist sect Boko Haram, has claimed responsibility for much of the violence, mostly perpetrated by gunmen on motorbikes or attackers using home_made explosives.
 
The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) says it will clamp down on any station or depot selling kerosene above the official pump price of N50 per litre. Mr Soyebo Adekunle, Head of Downstream in Lagos Zonal Office, made the pronouncement during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday. He said that the agency had constituted surveillance and monitoring team to monitor all filling stations and depots in Lagos metropolis to ensure compliance.

The most sought lawmakers were the new legislators, who were inaugurated in both chambers of the National Assembly only on Monday. There are over 70 new senators, while in the House, the newcomers are 266.

Diezani: Why We Gave Oil Blocks to NPDC

Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has explained why three oil blocks were assigned to Nigerian Petroleum Develop-ment Company (NPDC), the oil exploration and production arm of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Denying reports that the oil mining licences – OMLs 4, 38, and 41 – were improperly and illegally assigned to international oil and gas company, Seven Energy International Limited, through its Nigerian subsidiary Septa Energy Nigeria Limited, without open bidding, she said the facts of the matter have been jumbled up “as no sale of oil blocks took place at all”.
 
Ahmed Al-Gazali, chairman Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), delivered a stark warning to the federal government and policy makers on the implication of maintaining a bloated federal government with its over 400 parastatals, saying the agencies are problematic and a major source of waste of public funds. Al-Gazali gave the warning yesterday in Abuja during the Commission’s workshop on introducing performance contract in the Nigerian civil service with a theme: “Repositioning the Nigerian Civil Service for Service Delivery.”
 
Emerging from a closed-door meeting between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) on the drive to ‘restore sanity’ in the supply and distribution of kerosene nationwide, Austeen Oniwon, the group managing director (GMD) of NNPC, has admitted to a distribution lax. Oniwon said, “We believe that we had a distribution network problem which we are going to address and a supply problem which we have addressed. We observe that some of the kerosene that we send to the affiliates does not get to consumers as we wanted it to be.”
 
Thousands of students of the Kaduna Polytechnic yesterday protested over the seeming intractable stand-off between the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) branch and the management of the institution, sealing all the entrances to the institution and giving the Federal Government 48 hours to take action on the issue. Staff and management of the institution were barred by the students from entering the school premises as the students insisted that the school remain locked up until the Federal Government intervenes by calling off the strike and ordering ASUP to resume academic activities. Some of the students came with mattresses to the gate of the institution to sleep, indicating that they would not open it for any worker or the management until the problem is resolved, threatening to “wage war” if the government does not   intervene. Senators upset at 40% pay cut

Several senators yesterday expressed dissatisfaction with implementation of a 40 per cent cut in overheads of the National Assembly which has reduced their allowances by about a half, Daily Trust gathered. A source told our reporter that Senate President David Mark while revealing details of allowances to senators during closed session, said they are to be paid about N11 million for housing, car monetisation and furniture allowance. This is against about N18.5 million which was paid to senators of the Sixth Senate.

Fake soldier roams the Villa

Authorities of the Guards Brigade yesterday arrested a fake army corporal who found his way into the high-security Presidential Villa in Abuja and visited many offices as the escort of a lady. The Guards Brigade Public Relations Officer Captain Njideka Clara Ogwu said Hussain Emmanuel was arrested by soldiers on guard duty at Gate 11 of the villa trying to gain access into the main building. She said Emmanuel was in full army camouflage uniform and had an AK-47 helmet with a fake ID card when he was arrested.
 
ABUJA – EMBATTLED Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Sabur Bankole, yesterday said the invitation sent to him by the anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, was politically motivated. In a letter dated May 31, titled: Re: Investigation activities invitation letter: by Rt Hon Speaker Oladimeji Bankole and addressed to the Chairman of EFCC, Mrs Farida Waziri, stated that “prior to your letter under reference, no letter has ever been addressed to  or received by the speaker from your office, even though a lot has been written concerning him on the pages of newspapers in connection with your office on the subject  matter in recent times. “That the speaker has never written any letter to your office, hence your reference to your undated letter in connection with the above subject matter is very strange and has no basis.”

Nnamani gets unconditional bail

ENUGU—FORMER governor of Enugu State, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, and an Enugu-based contractor, Chief Jacob Nwatu, standing trial for alleged contract scam were Wednesday granted unconditional bail by Justice Benedict Agbata of the State High Court. Nnamani and Nwatu as well as four companies said to be owned by them were arraigned before the court Thursday last week on 15-count charge of allegedly defrauding the state government of over N1billion through some unexecuted road contracts. The court, thereafter, remanded them in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, pending the hearing of the bail applications filed by their counsels, Rickey Tarfa, SAN and Chuma Oguejiofor.

ABUJA- FRESH details emerged yesterday on how former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, 50, who wanted to be Peoples Democratic Party, PDP National Chairman,  became the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). Study shows GSM services have stagnated

It is a conclusion many Nigerian phone users will agree with. Some scholars at the American University of Nigeria have said a recent study of theirs shows that the Nigerian telecommunication industry has stagnated, with the telecoms operators not making significant efforts to provide adequate infrastructure to back the rising number of their customers. Augustine Odinma and other members of the university's Telecommunications Department said their findings show that the country's GSM networks are still plagued by persistent congestion, inconsistent and poor quality services. The study, which highlighted many of the common operational lapses associated with GSM telecommunication, noted that these challenges were likely to pose "dismal consequences for the future of the telecommunication industry nationwide."
