Electoral fraud: UNIBEN ASUU disowns lecturer

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Benin, Edo State chapter, has disowned the ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mr. Paul Uwugiaren, who was arrested by the police while attempting to manipulate the results of the National Assembly elections, held on April 9, in Ovia South West Local Government Council of Edo State. Uwugiaren had told journalists that he was a lecturer at UNIBEN shortly after he confessed that he was financially induced by an unnamed candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party to falsify the result in favour of the PDP.

Malpractices: Police arrest nine in Delta State

No fewer than nine persons suspected to have played principal roles in electoral malpractices and violence that rocked the April 9 National Assembly elections in Delta North senatorial District of Delta State have been arrested by the Police and would be facing trial under the Electoral Act 2010. The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim confirmed this yesterday in Abuja when he resisted moves by leaders of Peoples Democratic Party to have the men released on grounds of enforcing their fundamental human rights.

Mobile banking firm partners NDE on job creation

Why Ribadu crashed in South West

One big surprise that emerged from the presidential contest of Saturday is the way the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) crashed in the south west zone of the country, its strong hold where people support the party with a religious dogma. Penultimate week, the party swept clean the region in the national assembly elections, conceding only one Senatorial seat to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, three to the Labour Party in Ondo State and few federal constituencies in the region. Gunmen attack governorship running mate

The Labour Party governorship running mate in Abia State, Chief Allen Wogu, has escaped death following an attack on his motorcade by gunmen on Thursday. It was learnt that two of the vehicles in the convoy, including the one carrying him, were destroyed by bullets. The vehicles that were affected included a Passat 2.0 Executive 2010 Model with registration number AE 180 KPU and a Pathfinder Jeep with registration number EH 496 PHC.

Police probe death of 16-yr-old SSS 3 student

LAGOS - Detectives at the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Yaba, Lagos, yesterday, said investigation into the death of a Senior Secondary School III boy, whose lifeless body was found dangling from the roof of an uncompleted building in Badagry area of the state,  weekend, was still on to determine whether it was a case of  suicide or murder.

Taskforce seizes 50 metre-long barge of crude

Port Harcourt -The Joint Military Taskforce says it has seized a barge allegedly carrying an unspecified quantity of crude oil in the Niger Delta. The Spokesman for the taskforce, Lt. Col. Timothy Antigha told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt,yesterday that the task force confiscated the barge on March 1 at Andoni in Rivers. He said the quantity of the crude in the barge had not been determined by experts.

Church launches crackdown on fake marriages in UK

London -The Church of England said, Wednesday, that it would soon launch a crackdown on sham marriages within its fold across the UK. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that already, Vicars in the churches have been directed to tighten scrutiny of applications involving couples from outside most European countries. Gaddafi troops assail Misrata with Grad rockets

Beirut -  Libyan government forces struck the coastal city of Misrata with dozens of Grad rockets on Thursday, killing eight people, a rebel spokesman said. Misrata, Libya’s third-biggest city is the only major rebel stronghold in the west of the country. It has been the scene of major fighting between rebels and Gaddafi’s forces for several weeks.
 
Maiduguri -  The police in Borno has banned the use of polythene bags in polling units during Saturday’s Presidential election. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Mike Zuokumor,) in Maiduguri on Thursday said that the ban would cover the remaining elections in the state. Zuokumor said, “We have banned voters from carrying polythene bags and other suspicious materials in all polling units during the remaining elections. “Prospective voters, including women should also not carry black bags to the polling units while casting their votes.”

Carpenter beats up mother over a plate of rice

Jos- Nafiu Haruna, a 22-year-old carpenter, on Thursday appeared before a Kasuwar-Nama Upper Area Court for allegedly beating up his mother. The Prosecuting Police Officer, Mr Gokwat Ibrahim, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 10, 2011. Ibrahim further told the court that Mr Haruna Iguda, the father of the accused, reported the matter at the Laranto Police Station, after rescuing the victim from the hands of the suspect. According to the prosecutor, the accused, whom he described as “a habitual Indian hemp smoker’’, attacked his mother when she prevented him from eating a plate of rice.
 
Two gang members were jailed for  life yesterday for killing an innocent 16-year-old girl who had hoped to study at Oxford University, reports Sky News. Agnes Sina-Inakoju became the unwitting victim of “gang warfare” when she was blasted in the neck with a submachine gun by Leon Dunkley after she went to buy pizza.   Dunkley, 22, a member of the London Fields gang, fired through the window of Hoxton Chicken and Pizza Shop in a “callous and cold-blooded” attack in April last year.

Politicians, military behind oil thefts – Wikileaks

LAGOS – POLITICIANS and military leaders _ not militants _ are responsible for majority of the oil thefts in the Niger Delta, according to a U.S. diplomatic cable quoting an official and released by WikiLeaks. The cable claims that a member of a government panel on troubles in the Niger Delta implicated Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, a general whose brother became president, and a former vice president as being the biggest forces behind the thefts.
