In order to address the rise in kidnapping and hostage-taking across the country, members of the House of Representatives move to suggest death by hanging as a penalty for said crime in Nigeria.

The lawmakers decided this in the Wednesday plenary by passing a bill to forbid kidnapping, hostage-taking and stipulating a punishment for its contravention through second reading.

The bill was however committed to the committees on Justice, Police Affairs and Human Rights for further legislative scrutiny.
